Johannes Franciscus Van den Heuvel (1826-1873) learned to make alcohol from his stepfather in 1837. After all, he was a miller, and grain was plentiful for him. Thus, he was what we would call a precursor to vodka.
In 1694, his great-great-grandfather, Paulus van den Heuvel (1658-1730), along with his brothers and sister, inherited a brewery, a beer cellar with barrels, and an inn. A brewery that had belonged to the family since 1571.
And just before the Second World War, his grandsons Hubert and Achille Van den Heuvel acquired a majority stake in the spring water of the Belgian Ardennes.
